We have been having a long discussion on finding the difference between shock and surprise. Are they same? No. Can they be used interchangeably sometimes? Perhaps Not.. Lets see what does each word mean:
Cambridge definition
shock ( /ʃɒk//ʃɑːk/ ) : (the emotional or physical reaction to) a sudden, unexpected and usually unpleasant event or experience
surprise ( /səˈpraɪz//sɚ-/ ) : an unexpected event, or the feeling caused by something unexpected happening
So lets say it this way- surprises are generally good. It makes one happy(Like: My uncle paid us a surprise visit yesterday) but sometimes one can get bad surprises too. (Like: Last night’s heavy snow came as a complete surprise). However, one can never give anybody a good shock. Shocks are always bad(It was a shock to see her looking so ill).
So, when a bad surprise troubles you a lot, you are shocked.
Following pictures are the perfect reaction that people give when they are shock or surprised. Find out yourself which reaction would people give when they are shocked or surprised. 😀
